About the role

The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is the highest-leverage technical role at Shipsy. It is modelled directly on the forward-deployed engineering function pioneered by Palantir — where the engineers closest to the customer’s real problems, with the most context, build the fastest, messiest, most valuable things first.

You are embedded inside one of our strategic enterprise accounts, paired with a Deployment Strategist, under an Engagement Manager. You configure Shipsy’s platform to the customer’s reality, build the integrations that make it usable, and ship the agent workflows that make it transformative. You trade perfect design for speed and impact. What you build is a gravel road — and the platform team paves it into a highway for the next ten customers.

This is not an engineering role that sits in a squad and ships tickets. It is an engineer who lives in the customer’s operations, understands their world better than most of their own employees, and makes Shipsy work for them personally.

Key responsibilities

Candidate profile

We hire two complementary FDE profiles. Both are valid; the mix depends on the account.

Profile A — Engineering-deep. Strong software engineer from a high-growth technology company. IIT / NIT / BITS or equivalent. 3+ years of production engineering. Comfortable with ambiguity, comfortable owning a customer relationship, comfortable without a PM spec.

Profile B — Transformation-deep. Ex-MBB, GCC banking, or equivalent experience managing large-scale enterprise change programmes — with strong technical curiosity and hands-on AI fluency. You are not the person who shipped the backend, but you are the person who figured out why the backend needed to be rewritten.

Across both profiles, we are looking for:

Organisational context

You sit inside a pod led by an Engagement Manager, alongside a Deployment Strategist and a Support & Training lead. You report to the Engagement Manager for your account, with a dotted line to the regional Senior Director, Customer Solutions for career development. Your day-to-day is set by your customer’s needs — not by a central engineering sprint.

Travel to customer site is expected — typically 30 to 50 per cent of your time, sometimes more during go-live. When not on-site, you are in the Gurugram office with the other FDEs, peer-reviewing each other’s configurations and pattern-matching across accounts.

The progression path is clear. Senior FDEs become Engagement Managers. Exceptional FDEs carve out a platform patch of their own and move into Product Engineering to build the paved highway. A subset will move onto Shipsy’s AI Platform sub-org as Agent Engineers. The FDE function is the single largest source of senior talent we expect to develop over the next three years.
